Print-on-Demand (POD)
Print-on-Demand publishing is a viable option for self publishers, and a logical extension to an eBook project.
With this print production process, books and other content can be produced one at a time or, on demand. The POD system gives publishers an affordable option to the traditional several thousand unit (short-run)print run. The POD technology involves complex laser printing systems and electronically formatted text. Many new media publishers are hoping that the cost-effective POD technology will allow them to produce smaller numbers of a publication, profitably. POD lowers the bar of entry to print publication and is a logical intermediary step between eBooks and traditional book print production. POD publications however, still use paper and cannot be delivered as inexpensively, or as rapidly as eBooks. When you want something new to read RIGHT NOW, you just can’t beat the instant gratification of a DOWNLOAD NOW button. As consumers become more comfortable with electronic reading software and eBook readers, the POD option could decline in popularity with both authors and content consumers; but for now it is a great option for those authors and publishers who want to produce a print version of their publication.
The Pleiades Publishing Services team has over 40-years experience with both traditional print production and print on demand technology. We have researched all the available options to find the best possible POD solution available to our publishing clients. We have chosen CreateSpace, a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc. as our POD vendor of choice for those clients who wish to produce their publications in print. Create space also give our content creators the option of producing and selling CDs, DVDs, and as well as books on demand. CreateSpace also gives our clients the option of producing video downloads via Amazon Video on demand; and music downloads via Amazon MP3.
CreateSpace also offers publishing support solutions, including editing services that focus on grammar, spelling, and punctuation; and editorial advice and copywriting services. Additionally, the company offers marketing services, including publicity, review, book marketing advice and LCCN assignment services. An LCCN, or Library of Congress Control Number, is the number associated with the bibliographic record created by the Library of Congress for a given book. An LCCN does not guarantee that your book will be accepted to the Library of Congress catalog; it only offers the opportunity to be considered. The Library of Congress does not provide acceptance or rejection notification. To find out if your book has been cataloged, we suggest occasionally checking the Library of Congress Online Catalog.
